Traumality producer and videographer Ton Mazzone filmed, funded and edited this powerful, inspiring, deeply trauma-informed documentary. It started because the health professionals he saw for help with anxiety, social anxiety and depression never mentioned the role of trauma. When he discovered that adverse experiences are an important, well-researched risk factor for mental health conditions of all kinds including anxiety, depression, suicidality, PTSD, ADHD, and more, it changed his life. Even if you already understand a lot about trauma, you’ll learn something. when you watch Traumality. It is well worth seeing. You can get your ticket here.
Ton, The Creator and Producer, Healed Social Anxiety
Realizing he wasn’t stuck with a set of life-long symptoms he could only manage through medication, Ton went to trauma therapy, started to heal, and realized this information needed to be widely known.
Ton Mazzone has overcome his social anxiety to interview world-wide experts for his film, promote it, and push the conversation towards action.

Mission of Traumality
Ton’s mission is to change the face of public health and influence the UK to become trauma-informed at a country-wide level. He hopes to spread this information worldwide.
Emphasis on Covert Trauma and Attachment
Traumality the documentary has an emphasis on early developmental trauma and the “covert trauma” of attachment wounds and complex PTSD. These are under-acknowledged in public health, criminal justice and throughout all areas of our lives.
Traumality includes:
- examples from Ton’s lived experience
- snippets from a therapy session Ton did using IFS (internal family systems)
- interviewees sharing the science and clinical expertise
- review of political and financial incentives that stifle knowledge of trauma
- beautiful imagery, including with animated characters in the storyline
- examples of what is being done about trauma, including country-wide changes in Scotland
What Excited Me Most
One of the most exciting and inspiring parts of the film for me was learning that the entire country of Scotland is focussed on becoming trauma-informed and implementing this within public health, the criminal justice system, the education system, educating the public and beyond. I hadn’t known anyone was taking this information so seriously. We now have a role model.
Scotland started learning about trauma’s role in violence in 2005 and changes snow-balled in 2017 with a series of screenings of the KJPR film “Resilience.” Scotland is a role model, being the first country to mobilize to become trauma-informed through all levels of society, and has begun seeing the breadth of the benefits. This includes a 60% reduction in murder rates in Glasgow, which is no longer the “the murder capital of Europe” as it was dubbed in the early 2000s.

Quote from the Polyvagal Institute on Traumality
PVI, the Polyvagal Institute, is a non-profit organization co-founded by Dr. Stephen Porges and Deb Dana to serve as a home for Polyvagal Theory. Dr. Porges created the theory and Deb Dana has translated it into clinical practice for trauma recovery.
Traumality explores the link between trauma and mental health, the biology behind it, and the impact on the brain and body. It goes deeper, too: where is the research going, what are the barriers in our healthcare system, and how can we create a more trauma-informed future?
